Liberia electoral integrity concerns rise ahead of 2029 elections

The civil society organization Solidarity and Trust for a New Day (STAND) has issued a warning regarding the need to protect Liberia’s democratic safeguards well ahead of the 2029 general elections. Marking the International Day of Democracy, STAND Chairman Mulbah K. Morlu Jr. emphasized that electoral credibility depends on the strength of institutions and civic freedoms in the years leading up to the vote.

A central focus of these concerns is the National Elections Commission (NEC). Following his confirmation by the Senate and commissioning by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Jonathan K. Weedor has taken leadership of the electoral body. STAND has called for transparency regarding Weedor’s previous professional ties to the Unity Party to address potential conflicts of interest.

Simultaneously, political scrutiny has turned toward the Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL). While the group uses revolutionary rhetoric, critics point to its decision during the 2023 elections to support the Unity Party-led alliance rather than fielding its own presidential candidate. This political alignment has raised questions about the party's ability to position itself as a true alternative to the current administration.
