Liberia faces political unity efforts and calls for justice legislation

In Liberia, opposition parties have convened to attempt a third effort this decade at forming a unified political cooperation framework. Hosted by former President George Weah, the meeting included representatives from the Alternative National Congress, the All Liberian Party, the Citizens Movement for Change, the Movement for Progressive Change, and the Movement for Economic Empowerment. To avoid previous failures caused by leadership disputes, the groups agreed to form a steering committee tasked with drafting a framework for cooperation rather than a formal electoral alliance.

Simultaneously, the National Civil Society Consortium for Transitional Justice is pressuring President Joseph Boakai’s administration to pass enabling legislation for two critical institutions: the War and Economic Crimes Court (WECC) and the Specialized National Anti-Corruption Court (NACC). While the administration has taken preliminary steps, including the creation of an establishment office and the submission of draft bills, the consortium argues that the lack of operational statutes and funding hinders war crimes accountability and anti-corruption efforts.
