Liberia hosts regional maritime security operations and arrested vessel

Regional maritime security efforts in West Africa have seen significant developments involving joint patrols and the apprehension of a suspicious vessel. The Comoros-flagged cargo vessel ‘IB Atlantic IV’ has arrived at the Port of Monrovia after being arrested in Ivory Coast on August 9, 2026. The arrest was conducted by a joint maritime security mission under the Combined Maritime Task Force (CMTF) framework, led by the Armed Forces of Liberia.

The vessel is currently in the custody of the Liberian Coast Guard. Authorities have not yet confirmed the contents of the ship or the identities of its crew members as investigations are ongoing. The CMTF is a joint initiative involving Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone to combat piracy and transnational maritime crimes.

In a separate but related regional security effort, the Ghana Navy Ship GNS Achimota and the Ivorian Navy Vessel Fadika participated in Operation ANOUANZE IV. This ECOWAS Multinational Maritime Coordination Centre Zone F Joint Patrol concluded in Monrovia on August 27. Unlike historical peacekeeping missions in the region, this operation focused on enforcing maritime law, targeting illegal fishing, narcotics trafficking, and environmental pollution to support the regional blue economy.
