Liberia police leadership faces scrutiny over massive cocaine probe

Liberia is facing a national security crisis following the seizure of approximately 3,971 kilograms of cocaine, valued at roughly US$317 million to US$336 million. The massive narcotics find has triggered intense scrutiny of the Liberia National Police (LNP) and its leadership.

The Liberian People’s Party (LPP) has called on President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to require Inspector General of Police Gregory O. W. Coleman to recuse himself from the investigation. The LPP argues that the police cannot credibly investigate its own top commander, especially as the scale of the crisis suggests potential involvement of senior security officials.

Simultaneously, the LNP has formally demanded that Gbarpolu County Senator Amara Konneh provide evidence to support his allegations that senior security officials are being protected and that government officials may be supervising investigations in which they are implicated.

Further pressure has been applied by activist Martin K. N. Kollie, who alleged that Inspector General Coleman acquired luxury vehicles in the United States using funds outside of official government procurement processes. Kollie has called for the investigation to target high-level individuals rather than focusing solely on low and mid-level suspects.
