Liberia posthumously honors Rev. Dr. J. Edwin Lloyd Sr
The Liberian government has posthumously honored the late Rev. Dr. J. Edwin Lloyd Sr. with a presidential award for his extensive military and humanitarian service. Ambassador Al-Hassan Conteh presented the medal to Lloyd’s widow, Emma Mitchell Lloyd, during a ceremony at the Liberian Embassy in Washington, D.C., on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
Lloyd, a former officer in the Armed Forces of Liberia, served as the nation’s first director general of the Bureau of Veteran Affairs. His leadership was credited with establishing Liberia’s only blood bank and expanding humanitarian outreach. He was also recognized for his significant role in supporting Liberian refugees in Côte d’Ivoire during the country's civil war, where he helped establish support systems providing food, shelter, and education.
Ambassador Conteh described Lloyd as a man of “uncommon bravery” who advocated for justice and served as a model of patriotism and servant leadership.
