Liberia President Boakai convenes security meeting over major cocaine seizures

Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is convening a high-level joint security meeting to address major cocaine seizures and emerging security threats along the border with Guinea. The meeting follows two significant drug busts: a US$19.2 million seizure of 237.6 kilograms of cocaine at Roberts International Airport in June, and a subsequent seizure in Duazon, Margibi County, involving nearly four tonnes of suspected cocaine.

The United States has reaffirmed its support for Liberia’s efforts to strengthen security and the rule of law. U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Joe Zadrozny met with Liberian security officials to emphasize that a just legal system is vital for regional stability and the bilateral relationship between the two nations.

Amid these investigations, Senator Amara Konneh has characterized the situation as a “two-front war.” He urged President Boakai to combat both international drug cartels and potential internal corruption within the security establishment. Konneh specifically called for the dismissal and prosecution of compromised officials rather than mere recusal, highlighting growing public pressure for accountability within the government’s anti-drug efforts.
