Liberia faces political tension ahead of George Weah's return

Liberia is experiencing heightened political and social tension as former President George Manneh Weah prepares to return to the country on September 2. Information Minister Jerolinmek M. Piah has dismissed reports suggesting the government intends to arrest Weah upon his arrival, calling such claims unfounded.

The opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has expressed concerns regarding the political climate, specifically citing the detention of former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor. CDC members, including Bhofal Chambers and Samuel D. Tweah Jr., have criticized the Boakai administration, alleging selective justice and political policing.

Simultaneously, the nation is grappling with an escalating drug crisis. While the Nimba Council of Elders has voiced support for President Joseph Boakai’s crackdown on illicit narcotics, the issue has become a focal point of political debate. Critics argue that high-profile arrests related to drug trafficking are being used as tools for political persecution, complicating the public's perception of law enforcement efforts.
