Liberia receives first group of third-country deportees from the U.S

Liberia has received its first group of approximately 20 migrants deported from the United States under a new third-country deportation agreement. The arrivals, who landed at Roberts International Airport, include individuals from various nations, with Liberian officials stating that most are expected to be from Latin American countries such as Venezuela, Cuba, and Colombia.

Under the terms of the deal, Liberia has committed to accepting up to 1,200 such deportees over the next year. The Liberian government has stated that these individuals will be treated as guests and will have the right to apply for asylum or leave the country if they choose. To support this initiative, the United States has provided Liberia with $5 million for migration management activities.

During the arrival, reports indicated that a small group of deportees resisted and refused to deplane, requiring intervention by American federal agents. This agreement is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to deport migrants to third countries where they have no existing ties, a practice that has already involved dozens of nations, including several in Africa.
