Liberia Secures $50 Million IMF Disbursement After Staff Deal
The International Monetary Fund reached a staff‑level agreement with Liberia, clearing the way for a $50 million disbursement once the IMF Executive Board gives final approval, expected in late September 2026. The deal covers the fourth review of Liberia’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program and the first review under the new Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), allocating $26.1 million from the ECF and $23.9 million from the RSF.
The IMF praised Liberia’s strong economic performance, noting real GDP growth projected to rise from 5.1 % in 2025 to 5.5 % in 2026, a primary fiscal surplus of 2.4 % of GDP, and continued fiscal discipline. Inflation is expected to climb to about 6 % due to external energy price shocks. Reforms highlighted include a national database that tracks the fiscal costs of natural disasters, strengthening climate and health risk management. Liberia’s progress mirrors a broader trend in Africa where several countries, such as Ethiopia and Zimbabwe, maintain relatively low IMF debt levels, positioning themselves for sustainable growth and investment.
