Liberia seeks direct access to Green Climate Fund

Liberia is pursuing accreditation to gain direct access to the Green Climate Fund. This move would empower the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning to manage climate project financing, potentially securing approximately US$1 million in capacity-building support to establish necessary management systems.

Elijah Whapoe, the national coordinator for the Green Climate Fund at the Environmental Protection Agency, noted that African nations currently receive less than 4% of the fund’s total financing. He emphasized the importance of Liberia taking proactive steps to access resources intended for developing countries.

Acting Assistant Minister of Economic Policy Josephus T. C. Nyumalin stated that the nation's climate finance requirements exceed the current national budget. He highlighted that environmental challenges such as rising temperatures, flooding, and coastal erosion are impacting food security and the economy, arguing that climate change must be integrated into national economic planning.
