Liberia Supreme Court overturns murder conviction of Valington B. Kaiser

The Supreme Court of Liberia has overturned the murder conviction of Valington B. Kaiser, popularly known as ‘Bishop,’ who had been serving a life sentence. The court determined that contradictions in the prosecution’s evidence created reasonable doubt, making it unsafe to uphold the original verdict.

Kaiser was originally convicted in March 2023 for the 2022 killing of 18-year-old Fatu Blasuwoah at the old LPRC compound in Gardnerville. The prosecution’s case had relied on six witnesses, CCTV footage, forensic evidence, and a green-handled knife alleged to be the murder weapon.

In the ruling, Justice Yusuf D. Kaba noted that inconsistencies regarding the surveillance footage and forensic findings concerning the weapon were sufficient to generate reasonable doubt. The court emphasized the criminal justice principle that uncertainty in evidence must benefit the accused.
