Liberia Supreme Court reserves ruling on lawmaker expulsion
The Supreme Court of Liberia has reserved its ruling in a legal challenge brought by Yekeh Kolubah, the expelled Representative for Montserrado County District 10. The case examines whether the House of Representatives violated Kolubah’s constitutional right to due process by proceeding with his expulsion despite a judicial stay order.
Kolubah’s legal team argues that the House disregarded a writ of prohibition and stay order issued by Associate Justice Yussif D. Kaba on April 16, 2026, which was intended to halt proceedings against him. The dispute centers on whether the House leadership was properly served with this order. While Kolubah’s counsel maintains the order was delivered to the Legislature’s Sergeant-at-Arms, representatives for the House argued the expulsion occurred before the court's communication was officially recognized.
Kolubah was expelled on April 17, 2026, following a resolution signed by 49 of the 73 members of the House. The disciplinary action stemmed from controversial statements made by Kolubah regarding the Makona River boundary dispute. The court's decision will determine if the legislative vote was taken in breach of a binding judicial directive.
