Liberia has entered an agreement with the United States to accept up to 1,200 third-country deportees over the next year. The arrangement, based on an exchange of notes from September 2025, is part of the Trump administration’s broader policy of transferring foreign nationals to countries other than their own.

Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah stated that the deportees include nationals from Africa, North America, South America, and the Caribbean who are medically authorized to travel. The first group of 20 individuals arrived at Roberts International Airport on Thursday, August 20, 2026. The Liberian government emphasized that the individuals are being received as guests and are not being brought in as criminals.

Under the terms of the deal, transferred persons are free to leave Liberia at any time or may apply for asylum. While the Liberian government denied receiving direct financial compensation for the arrangement, it noted that the United States will provide support to help manage the program and strengthen Liberia’s migration system. Officials noted that many of the deportees may have immigration violations or protection orders from U.S. courts preventing their return to their home countries.
