Liberia to accept 1,200 third-country deportees from the US
Liberia has entered into an agreement to accept up to 1,200 third-country deportees from the United States over the course of one year. The program, part of the Trump administration’s broader immigration crackdown, involves transferring individuals who are not nationals of the receiving country. The deportees include citizens from Africa, North America, South America, and the Caribbean.
Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah stated that the first group of 20 individuals is expected to arrive in Liberia this Thursday. Piah described the arrangement as a humanitarian gesture, noting that deportees will be treated as guests and will have the freedom to seek asylum or leave the country at their discretion. Liberia will receive assistance from the United States to manage the program and strengthen its national migration system.
Justice Minister Natu Oswald Tweh confirmed that the Liberian government has screened the list of migrants prior to their arrival, noting that most individuals have immigration violations or offenses. While the agreement is being framed as humanitarian by Liberian officials, advocates have raised concerns that such third-country deportation deals can serve as a legal loophole to bypass protection orders issued by U.S. immigration judges.
