Liberia: Voter education challenges for deaf citizens

Individuals with disabilities in Liberia, particularly those who are deaf or mute, face significant barriers to accessing voter education ahead of the October 10, 2023, General Elections. These challenges include societal stigma, prejudice, discriminatory laws, and physical obstacles that hinder access to information and public spaces.

Effective voter education is considered essential for promoting political activism, peaceful election conduct, and the acceptance of results. With over three thousand deaf and mute individuals reported in the country according to the 2008 Census, there is a critical need for the National Elections Commission of Liberia to implement inclusive civic campaigns through mass media, including print, radio, the internet, and face-to-face engagement.

Beyond elections, the lack of agency for people with disabilities impacts their access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and employment, which has broader implications for national development.
