Liberia: Warlords support proposed War and Economic Crimes Court

Accused Liberian warlords have emerged as unexpected supporters of the proposed War and Economic Crimes Court. These individuals are urging lawmakers to pass legislation to establish the court, arguing that a formal trial is necessary to achieve justice, provide closure, or clear their names.

It has been seventeen years since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission recommended the creation of such a court. Experts note that the delay in establishing accountability has prolonged psychological and social trauma for both victims and former combatants.

Joshua Blahyi, a former combatant known during the civil war as ‘General Butt Naked’, is among the most prominent figures expressing remorse. Blahyi previously confessed to atrocities during the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings, where he was one of only 30 perpetrators to admit to their crimes.
