Liberia's CMC rejects CDC invitation to opposition roundtable

The Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) has declined an invitation from the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) to attend a roundtable for opposition leaders scheduled for September 5, 2026. The CMC stated that the proposed meeting, to be held at the Jamaica Resort near Monrovia, appears to have a predetermined leadership structure and organizational framework, which undermines the principle of negotiating unity among equals.

CMC Political Leader Musa Hassan Bilily proposed an alternative framework for opposition cooperation. Rather than focusing on leadership appointments, Bilily suggested that parties should first develop a common national agenda and a formal ‘contract with the people.’ This approach would involve a joint assessment of Liberia’s political, economic, and security conditions to establish shared principles and priorities before establishing a central leadership structure.
