Liberia’s Independence Day Sparks Political Critique and Calls for National Unity
On July 26, 2026, Liberia marked its 179th Independence Day with two contrasting political messages. The opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) warned that the country was sliding toward a de facto one‑party state under the Unity Party administration, citing weakened judicial independence, concentration of power and alleged international drug‑cartel infiltration. CDC National Chairman Atty. Janga A. Kowo called for an urgent, transparent, internationally supported investigation into the reported cartel networks, stating, “The possibility of Liberia drifting toward a de facto one‑party state must concern every citizen, regardless of political affiliation.”
In a separate address, former official Elias Shoniyin urged Liberians to reflect on the nation’s historic struggle for Black sovereignty, confront past injustices and pursue renewal through unity, integrity and institutional reform. He highlighted ongoing challenges – poverty, unemployment, rising living costs and limited opportunities – while noting recent efforts to restore public trust, rebuild infrastructure and revitalize the economy. Shoniyin warned, “a nation that refuses to remember cannot truly heal,” and called for continued commitment to accountability and development.
