Liberland micronation receives 800,000 citizenship applications
The Free Republic of Liberland, a micronation declared in 2015 by Vit Jedlicka on the 16.8 square kilometer Gornja Siga territory, has received over 800,000 citizenship applications. The area is a legally neutral zone resulting from a border dispute between Serbia and Croatia.
Despite lacking official recognition from the international community, the project has attracted significant interest from technology billionaires and crypto figures, including Justin Sun. The entity promotes a digital governance model characterized by minimal state intervention, near-zero taxes, and a meritocratic structure where voting rights are tied to financial contributions via digital tokens known as ‘Liberland Merits’.
Physical access to the territory remains a major obstacle. Croatia does not recognize Liberland’s sovereignty and maintains strict security measures in the region, including preventing access via the Danube River. These enforcement actions have reportedly prevented even Jedlicka from entering the land he claims to lead.
