Liberty Galați workers face unpaid wages amid plant sale uncertainty

Employees at the Liberty Galați steel plant are working without full pay, according to labor unions. The CNS Cartel ALFA union reports that the last full salary payment was made in April. In May, workers received only 1,500 lei, and no full wages have been issued since. Despite the lack of payment, staff continue to perform duties related to security, maintenance, and asset protection.

The union is calling for urgent government intervention to settle outstanding wages and to establish a concrete plan for the plant's future. They argue that the situation cannot be treated merely as a commercial matter or a sale procedure, given the strategic importance of the industrial site and the thousands of employees involved.

Efforts to sell the plant have faced challenges; two previous auctions failed to find a buyer, leading to a reduction in the starting price from 709 million euros in March to 463 million euros in June. Unions are demanding transparency regarding the sale process and protection for workers' rights to prevent mass resignations and asset degradation.
