Liberty Mutual acquires Brazil's Austral Seguradora
Liberty Mutual has reached an agreement to acquire Austral Seguradora, one of Brazil’s five largest surety insurance companies. The acquisition marks the American insurer's return to the Brazilian market following the sale of its retail operations to HDI in 2023.
Through this deal, Liberty Mutual will focus on corporate risks, including surety, financial risks, and civil liability. The transaction includes Austral’s client portfolio, broker relationships, and approximately 100 employees. The transaction value was not disclosed.
Austral Seguradora, founded in 2010 and based in Rio de Janeiro, is owned by the investment manager Vinci Compass. While the insurance company is being sold, the reinsurance arm, Austral Re, will remain under the control of Vinci Compass. Nate Zangerle, Liberty Mutual’s global president of surety, stated that the acquisition reinforces the company’s commitment to being a leading surety provider in Brazil as part of its Latin American expansion strategy.
