Liberty Party signals political independence ahead of 2029 elections

During a rebranding ceremony and groundbreaking for a new headquarters in Grand Bassa County, Liberty Party (LP) leaders signaled a shift toward political independence. Senator Abraham Darius Dillon, the party’s vice chair for political affairs, stated that the LP is ‘no helping force’ and intends to assert its own influence in the 2029 elections.

Dillon’s remarks suggest a potential fracture in the Unity Party Alliance, the coalition that supported President Joseph Boakai’s 2023 victory. While Dillon noted it is too early for specific 2029 strategies, he emphasized that the party was not founded to remain in a subordinate or supporting role.

The event also featured signs of internal reconciliation within the Liberty Party. Charlyne Brumskine and Senate President Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, who were previously involved in internal party conflicts, shared a public moment of reconciliation during the ceremony. Brumskine also announced her departure to represent Liberia in a regional court in Nigeria.
