Liberty State Park opens new ferry terminal with emergency evacuation capacity

New Jersey authorities have officially inaugurated an expanded ferry terminal at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. The facility features a large advanced engineering barge measuring approximately 200 feet long by 50 feet wide, designed to enhance maritime mobility between New Jersey and Manhattan.

Beyond daily tourism and commuter transit, the terminal is strategically designed for large-scale emergency evacuations. The installation includes nine docking slips, four of which are dedicated exclusively to emergency operations. This capability is intended to provide a rapid response mechanism for regional crises, drawing lessons from the September 11, 2001, attacks, when a massive fleet of over 150 vessels coordinated the largest waterborne evacuation in U.S. history, rescuing approximately 500,000 people.

According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation and the U.S. Coast Guard, the new infrastructure allows multiple rescue and transport vessels to dock simultaneously, providing authorities with critical alternative embarkation points during regional emergencies.
