Libraries Unlimited removes overdue book fines in South Hams

Libraries Unlimited has announced the removal of overdue book fines across several facilities, including those in Dartmouth, Ivybridge, Kingsbridge, Salcombe, Stoke Fleming, and Totnes. Previously, users faced daily fines of 30p per book, or 20p for seniors, with a maximum cap of £28.80.

This decision follows a 2022 initiative that eliminated late fees for children and young people. Alex Kittow, Chief Executive Officer at Libraries Unlimited, stated that the goal is to remove barriers to reading and encourage people who have avoided libraries due to existing debt to return.

The policy change applies strictly to overdue fines. Reservation fees and charges for lost books will continue to be enforced. The organization aims to reposition its libraries as community hubs for learning and creativity while ensuring resources remain available for the residents of Devon and Torbay.
