Library Card Sign-up Month celebrated with Laufey and local initiatives
September marks Library Card Sign-up Month, a campaign aimed at encouraging the public to utilize library resources. The American Library Association (ALA) has named Icelandic-Chinese musician and two-time GRAMMY winner Laufey as the honorary chair for the 2026 campaign. Laufey, an author and musician, will promote the various services libraries offer, including books, audiobooks, makerspaces, and tool lending programs.
In Santa Monica, the Santa Monica Public Library (SMPL) is celebrating the month with a special-edition library card designed by local artist Al Mercado. The card features artwork from the city’s Art Everywhere: Local Canvas initiative. Additionally, the library is continuing its Read Local, Shop Local: Community Discount Program, which provides cardholders with exclusive offers from local businesses. The library also scheduled a family event on September 12 at the Main Library to decorate card sleeves and lanyards.
