Library initiatives promote literacy in the UK and UAE
Various regional initiatives are promoting literacy and reading through library services and professional recognition.
In North Northamptonshire, the local council has launched a free ‘Book Bingo’ challenge for library customers aged 18 and over. Part of the National Year of Reading and funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, the initiative encourages participants to complete six themed reading challenges using various formats, including fiction, non-fiction, and audiobooks. Participants who complete the challenge can enter a prize draw for a £50 book token. The program runs until March 13, 2027.
In the United Arab Emirates, the Emirates Literature Foundation, in partnership with The Executive Council of Dubai, held the UAE School Librarian of the Year Award 2026. The ceremony, held at the Museum of the Future, honored librarians from public and private schools in Abu Dhabi and Dubai for their contributions to student development and reading innovation. Winners were recognized across categories including School Librarian of the Year, Best Use of Resources, and Best in Innovation.
