Libya and Iraq sign multi-sector cooperation agreements

The Libyan Government of National Unity and the Iraqi government have signed multiple cooperation agreements and memorandums of understanding following the conclusion of a joint committee meeting in Baghdad. The meetings, held on Sunday and Monday, were led by Libyan official Taher Al-Baour and Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein.

The new agreements and executive programs cover a wide range of sectors, including political, economic, commercial, and investment cooperation. Additionally, the pacts extend to security, transportation, education, culture, and health.

This resumption of high-level institutional cooperation marks a significant milestone, as the Libya-Iraq Joint Committee had been inactive for approximately 25 years. The committee’s operations were previously halted following the 2003 invasion of Iraq and the subsequent fall of the regime in Baghdad, as well as the 2011 fall of the Muammar Gaddafi regime in Libya. The recent meetings aimed to revitalize bilateral ties and discuss regional and international developments.
