Libya closes 490 petrol stations amid fuel smuggling allegations

Libya’s Tripoli-based Government of National Unity has ordered the closure of 490 petrol stations in western Libya due to alleged involvement in fuel smuggling. Major General Emad Trabelsi stated that stations will only be permitted to reopen if they meet approved specifications. The closures aim to curb the smuggling of subsidized fuel, which is significantly cheaper than market rates.

Simultaneously, the Brega Petroleum Marketing Company reported a significant distribution of 17.6 million litres of fuel through the ports of Tripoli and Benghazi. According to spokesperson Ahmed Al-Maslati, 10.85 million litres were distributed from Tripoli Seaport and 6.75 million litres through Benghazi Port. The company noted that regular arrivals of fuel tankers and coordinated operations between ports and storage depots have helped maintain available stocks and support the country’s distribution network.
