Libya electricity company investigates suspected sabotage of power stations

The General Electricity Company of Libya has launched a comprehensive investigation into suspected sabotage and damage targeting several transformation stations and power generation facilities across the country.

Recent incidents include an explosion at transformation station 16, which occurred following uncoordinated attempts to restore power. Additionally, lines at the Souq al-Jumaa power plant were disconnected after protesters reportedly stormed the facility and forcibly removed staff on duty.

These disruptions follow protests in Tripoli driven by a chronic electricity crisis, which is exacerbated by high summer temperatures and increased demand for air conditioning. The company warned that such acts of vandalism and unauthorized interference threaten the stability of the entire electrical grid and could lead to widespread blackouts. Authorities are working to identify those responsible for the damage to the national infrastructure.
