Libya boat capsizing kills or leaves missing over 50 migrants

On June 12 a boat carrying about 60 migrants capsized off the eastern Libyan coast near Tobruk. Ten people survived, eleven bodies were recovered and roughly 40 others remain missing, bringing the confirmed death or disappearance count to 51.

Libyan coast‑guard and Red Crescent teams retrieved bodies that washed ashore over a 24‑hour period, with later reports indicating at least 15 corpses, including a child, were found along the shoreline. The incident is part of a wider migration crisis; the International Organization for Migration recorded more than 800 migrant deaths or disappearances on the central Mediterranean route between 1 January and 16 May 2026, and over 1,300 in the previous year.

Libya has become a key transit point for people fleeing conflict and poverty in Africa and the Middle East. Smugglers load overcrowded, unsafe vessels, and those intercepted and returned to Libya often face abuse in detention centers, including forced labour, beatings, rape and torture, as documented by United Nations investigators.
