Fawzi al-Mansuri, Libyan military intelligence chief, killed in Benghazi bombing
Major General Fawzi al-Mansuri, the head of military intelligence for the Libyan National Army (LNA), was assassinated in a car bombing in Benghazi. The attack occurred on Monday evening in the Al-Hawari district, specifically near the Al-Sayyida Aisha neighborhood, as Mansuri was leaving a local mosque.
Reports indicate that an improvised explosive device (IED) was attached to his vehicle, which detonated as he was entering or leaving the car. While no group has officially claimed responsibility, LNA leaders, including Khaled Haftar, have characterized the incident as a “despicable terrorist tactic” and a project targeting the entire region.
Mansuri was a prominent figure within the military structure of Khalifa Haftar, having previously served as the commander of the Sebha Military Region since August 2021 and as the commander of the Ain Zara and Wadi al-Rabi fronts during the 2019–2020 Tripoli offensive. He was appointed to his current role as director of the Military Intelligence Department in May 2024.
The assassination has heightened security concerns in eastern Libya, marking one of the first high-profile attacks against a senior LNA official in nearly a decade. Investigations are currently underway, overseen by a security committee established by the LNA General Command under the supervision of Saddam Haftar. The Government of National Unity in Tripoli also condemned the attack, describing it as a threat to national stability.
