Libya oil production halts as security guards demand administrative changes
Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC) has threatened to declare force majeure following the suspension of operations at several oil production sites. The disruption occurred after members of the Petroleum Facilities Guard, a security service currently under the Ministry of Defense, closed a valve on the Hamada-Zawiya crude-loading pipeline.
Production has completely halted at the Hamada and Tahara oilfields, as well as at a pumping station. The Petroleum Facilities Guard has demanded that their agency be transferred from the Ministry of Defense to the NOC for both financial and administrative control. They have called for a clear implementation timeline from the prime ministry and the NOC.
As a warning, the Guard announced it would implement partial production cuts for one week at the Wafa, Al-Khamsa, and El Feel fields, stating that a total shutdown would follow if their demands are not met. Because oil production accounts for approximately 90% of Libya's economy, the NOC warned that these disruptions constitute a devastating blow to the national economy.
