Libya political factions initial unification agreement in Tunis
The Libya Dialogue Committee has initialed a final draft agreement in Tunis aimed at unifying the country’s divided administration and organizing national elections. Meeting in a 4+4 format, parties reached a consensus on a framework to restructure the election commission, amend election laws, and merge executive organs.
The agreement is built upon three primary pillars: the adoption of a consensus-based election framework, the establishment of a new unified government, and the launch of an expanded political dialogue involving various political factions. This process follows a United Nations roadmap designed to address the political split that has existed since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi.
The committee plans to reconvene in Libya before the end of August to prepare for the official announcement and discuss implementation details. The United States has expressed support for the progress, with Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to President Donald Trump for Arab and African Affairs, stating that the advancement in election laws and the High National Election Commission is a significant step toward a reliable electoral process.
