Libya summons US diplomat following Trump's offensive remarks

The Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the US chargé d'affaires, Inga Heemink, to deliver a formal protest following disparaging comments made by Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Perry, Georgia. Trump characterized Libya, Yemen, Haiti, and Somalia as “terror-infested” and “shithole countries” while criticizing Senator Jon Ossoff for sponsoring migration-related legislation.

In response, Libya's rival administrations in both the east and west issued unified condemnations, rejecting the use of the nation in US electoral debates. Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah of the Government of National Unity emphasized Libya's sovereignty and the sacrifices made by its people in the fight against terrorism.

Following the backlash, Trump issued a statement on Truth Social attempting to clarify his position. He described the Libyan people as “proud, resilient, and hospitable” and noted the US commitment to its relationship with Libya, particularly regarding the shared fight against ISIS. However, he maintained that Libya must not remain a corridor for illegal migration.
