Libya teachers' strike disrupts schools nationwide
A nationwide strike by public school teachers in Libya has paralyzed the education system, affecting approximately 1.6 million students. The protests, which began on September 13, have escalated from sit-ins in Tripoli to an open-ended general strike spanning both the western region, governed by the Government of National Unity (GNU), and the eastern region, controlled by Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army.
Teachers are demanding significant reforms, including the harmonization of the public sector salary scale, an end to declining real wages, the payment of unpaid arrears, and improved medical coverage. According to the General Union of Libyan Teachers, monthly salaries for public educators currently range between 1,000 and 2,500 Libyan dinars, which workers claim is insufficient to meet the rising cost of living.
In response to the escalating unrest, Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah has met with cabinet members to discuss potential solutions. The crisis has gained momentum as other labor unions have threatened to join the movement unless the government addresses the broader economic instability and cost-of-living crisis affecting the country.
