Libyan Airlines former chairman detained over embezzlement allegations
The Libyan General Prosecutor's Office has ordered the detention of a former chairman of the board for the state-owned carrier Libyan Airlines. The former executive is accused of systematic embezzlement of company funds.
Investigators allege that during 2017 and 2018, the suspect misappropriated approximately five million Libyan dinars from revenues related to pilgrimage flights. Additionally, the individual is accused of embezzling 30,000 US dollars that had been paid by 33 pilots for specialized professional training that was reportedly not provided as agreed.
Anti-corruption prosecutors ordered the detention to prevent potential interference with witness testimonies. Authorities are currently investigating whether other officials are involved and if funds were transferred to foreign accounts.
