Libyan authorities identify bright sky phenomenon as meteor

The Libyan Center for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences has clarified the nature of a bright object seen in the skies over Tripoli and other western regions of Libya. The center confirmed that the phenomenon was a meteor.

Social media footage showed a bright object crossing the sky, accompanied by a noticeable flash and a loud boom, which caused widespread speculation among residents. The center explained that such events occur when a small celestial body, such as a meteoroid or part of a comet, enters Earth's atmosphere at high speeds, causing it to burn up due to friction.

The phenomenon was observed in several cities, including the capital, Tripoli, as well as Misrata and Zuwara. While some residents reported hearing a loud noise and feeling a slight tremor, authorities have not confirmed any seismic activity or the discovery of meteoritic fragments.
