Libyan leaders agree to reactivate 6+6 Committee for elections
Libyan political leaders met in Ankara to discuss reactivating the ‘6+6 Committee’ to advance the country’s electoral process. Libyan House of Representatives Speaker Aguila Saleh and High Council of State President Mohamed Takala agreed to host the committee in the coming days to finalize election laws and prepare for upcoming votes.
The meeting emphasized the need to unify sovereign institutions and the executive authority to end institutional division. Both leaders stressed that the political process must operate within the framework of the constitutional declaration and existing political agreements.
However, the move faces internal criticism. State Council member Saad bin Sharada questioned the necessity of returning to the ‘6+6 Committee,’ arguing that election laws were already produced in 2023 and questioning why years have passed without elections. He expressed concern that meetings held in Turkey might lead to endless political debates without clear timelines.
Additionally, observers have highlighted security concerns, noting that while the army controls much of the territory, armed groups in Tripoli continue to influence public affairs and weaken state institutions, complicating the path toward stability.
