Libyan military seizes 1.3 million narcotic pills after firefight

The Subul al-Salam infantry brigade of the Libyan National Army seized over 1.3 million narcotic pills following a firefight with smugglers in the southeastern town of Kufra. The engagement resulted in injuries to three soldiers.

Military media released images of the seizure, showing white pills marked with the number one and the text ‘made in Germany’. The brigade operates under the Land Forces General Staff and reports to military commander Khalifa Haftar.

According to a January report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Libya has emerged as a significant regional transit hub for synthetic drugs and other narcotics. The UN noted that drug gangs have exploited the country's internal instability and division following the 2011 toppling of Muammar Gaddafi.
