Libya's House of Representatives ratifies 2019 maritime deal with Turkey FAST-MOVING
The Libyan House of Representatives, based in eastern Libya, has voted unanimously to ratify the 2019 maritime memorandum of understanding with Turkey regarding the delimitation of maritime jurisdiction in the Mediterranean Sea. This decision also rescinds a 2020 parliamentary resolution that had rejected such agreements and severed political ties with Ankara.
The ratification has drawn sharp condemnation from several regional actors and international bodies. Greece and Cyprus have denounced the agreement as illegal and a violation of sovereign rights, while Egypt stated the memorandum is void and infringes upon its exclusive economic zone and continental shelf. Israel also criticized the move, accusing Turkey of undermining stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The European Union has maintained a firm stance, describing the memorandum as ‘null and void’ and a violation of the sovereign rights of third states, noting it does not comply with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan welcomed the decision, describing it as a diplomatic achievement that is legally and politically legitimate. He emphasized that the agreement aims to promote stability and mutual benefit in the region.
