Libya’s Al-Mnifi announces national reconciliation committee and election goals

Mohamed Al-Mnifi, President of Libya’s Presidential Council, has announced the establishment of a National Committee for De-escalation, Conflict Prevention, and Reconciliation. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Al-Mnifi stated the initiative aims to create a secure environment for a political process and called for support from Libyan parties and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

Al-Mnifi emphasized the need to end Libya’s prolonged transitional period through credible, inclusive elections rather than temporary political deals. He stressed that the political process must remain Libyan-owned to avoid international guardianship and must be based on constitutional frameworks and national consensus.

In a meeting with US adviser Massad Boulos in New York, Al-Mnifi discussed efforts to unify state institutions and create the necessary conditions for presidential and parliamentary elections. Boulos praised Al-Mnifi’s role in fostering consensus and stability. Additionally, Al-Mnifi expressed Libya’s intention to seek a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2028-2029 term, aiming to restore the country’s international role.
