Libya's High Council of State rejects 4+4 dialogue outcomes

The Libyan High Council of State has officially rejected the outcomes of the ‘4+4’ small dialogue committee, a move that threatens to stall political progress in the country. The committee’s findings focused on a political roadmap, including the restructuring of the High National Elections Commission and establishing a legal framework for presidential and legislative elections to be held within 24 months.

In addition to rejecting the committee's outputs, the Council voted to strip membership from two of its members, Ali Abdelaziz and Abdeljalil Al-Shawish, due to their participation in the UN-sponsored 4+4 meetings without prior Council approval. This decision has drawn criticism from within the Council, with some members describing it as a negative signal to those seeking to end national division.

The rejection comes as the United Nations Support Mission in Libya has provided the House of Representatives and the High Council of State a one-month deadline to approve the 4+4 agreement, which was signed on August 30.
