Libya's House of Representatives elects Al-Salhin Abdelnabi al-Obeidi as new Speaker

Libya’s eastern-based House of Representatives has elected Al-Salhin Abdelnabi al-Obeidi as its new Speaker, ending the 12-year tenure of Aguila Saleh. The leadership change occurred in Benghazi following a vote by the 170-member chamber.

The transition follows a recent decision by 98 lawmakers to implement a new system that limits the terms of the speaker and deputy speakers to a single 12-month period. This change effectively ends the leadership arrangement that had been in place since 2014. Alongside the new speaker, the parliament elected Tarek al-Ashtar and Mesbah Douma as the first and second deputy speakers, respectively.

Lawmakers cited growing discontent with the previous leadership, specifically pointing to decisions made without consulting members of the House. While the new leadership aims to focus on national unity, stability, and institutional reform, Aguila Saleh has rejected the legitimacy of the proceedings, claiming the vote was unofficial and lacked legal effect.

The political shift comes amid Libya’s ongoing division between the UN-recognized government in Tripoli and the eastern administration supported by military commander Khalifa Haftar. The United States has expressed support for the new leadership, stating its intention to work with the House to advance the country’s political process and institutional unification.
