Libya's neighbors call for Libyan-led political solution

The Tripartite Mechanism of Libya's neighboring countries—comprising Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia—has emphasized that any political solution to the crisis in Libya must stem from the will and national consensus of the Libyan people. This stance was issued in a joint statement following a ministerial meeting held in Algeria.

The foreign ministers of the three nations, Badr Abdelatty of Egypt, Ahmed Attaf of Algeria, and Mohamed Ali Nefti of Tunisia, called for coordinated regional and international efforts to support a comprehensive political process. They expressed full support for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to facilitate simultaneous, free, and fair presidential and parliamentary elections based on an agreed-upon constitutional and legal framework.

Additionally, the ministers stressed the importance of national reconciliation and the protection of Libya's resources. They specifically called for the safeguarding of frozen Libyan financial assets held abroad, ensuring they are managed properly by international financial institutions in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions. Libyan officials estimate these frozen assets, which include fixed assets, deposits, and bonds, to be worth approximately $200 billion.
