Licata hospital performs successful hip surgery on 100-year-old patient

A 100-year-old woman in Licata, Italy, has successfully undergone surgery and begun walking again following an accidental fall that resulted in a lateral fracture of the femoral neck.

The procedure was performed at the San Giacomo d’Altopasso Hospital by an orthopedic and traumatology team led by Dr. Alberto Rapisarda. To minimize surgical stress, doctors utilized a minimally invasive technique involving the application of an intramedullary nail.

Following the operation, the patient began assisted walking rehabilitation within 48 hours of admission. After a five-day hospital stay, she was discharged in good general condition to continue her rehabilitation process at home. Medical staff noted that while such fractures can disrupt the fragile balance of elderly patients, timely intervention and minimally invasive methods can help restore pre-existing conditions.
