Licensed Shows Drive Over Half of Netflix's New Subscriber Growth

Netflix plans to spend $20 billion on content this year, a 10 % increase from the previous year. Data from Parrot Analytics shows that licensed programming now accounts for more than half of the series‑driven subscriber acquisitions on the platform. Since early 2025, licensed series have consistently contributed over 50 % of new global sign‑ups, despite representing only about 40 % of Netflix's catalog.

In the first quarter of 2026, licensed shows generated roughly 53 % of the platform’s new subscribers. The most effective title was the original series “Bridgerton,” which added about 360,000 users, while the licensed anime “One Piece” contributed around 178,000 new subscribers. These figures illustrate the growing commercial importance of third‑party IP for Netflix’s growth strategy.
