Liceo Casino de Pontevedra maintains traditional debutante ball

The Liceo Casino de Pontevedra continues its tradition of hosting a formal gala ball every second Sunday of August, coinciding with the feast of the Virgen Peregrina. The event follows a strict protocol where men wear tuxedos and women wear long dresses.

Despite modern debates regarding gender equality, the event serves as a ‘puesta de largo’ or social debut for young women. Contrary to expectations of declining interest in such traditions, the number of participants has increased, rising from fourteen young women in 2014 to twenty-two this year. The tradition has been maintained by the Liceo Casino since its founding in 1855.
