Santiago universities suspend classes following mass massacre threats

The Chilean Investigative Police (PDI) arrested a man in the southern sector of the Metropolitan Region following a series of mass massacre threats sent to several universities. The suspect, who used the email address 'Amermelao' and identified himself as a 'Satanic Terrorist,' sent messages that included references to a 'Satanic terrorist neo-Nazi organization.'

The threats prompted several major institutions to suspend in-person activities and transition to remote learning for safety. The Universidad de Santiago de Chile (Usach), Universidad Diego Portales (UDP), Universidad Alberto Hurtado (UAH), and Universidad Academia de Humanismo Cristiano (UAHC) all implemented security protocols or suspended campus activities. Specifically, UDP moved classes to platforms such as Zoom and Canvas, while UAH transitioned undergraduate classes to Microsoft Teams.

Authorities continue to investigate the origin of the messages and the full extent of the suspect's communications.
