Liceu Francês Charles Lepierre in Lisbon closed for security

The Charles Lepierre French Lyceum in Lisbon has suspended classes for Thursday, October 8, 2026, citing security concerns. The decision was made in coordination with the French Embassy in Portugal following suspicions that secondary school students intended to block the school in solidarity with ongoing protests in France.

The movement in France began in mid-September, initially centered in the Paris region and Créteil, where students and teachers protested staff shortages and deteriorating school infrastructure. The protests have since spread nationwide, with students highlighting systemic inequalities regarding the quality of education and facilities in disadvantaged neighborhoods.

According to French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, the unrest has resulted in significant casualties and legal action, with reports of over 1,000 injuries and more than 6,000 arrests.
