LiDAR technology reveals ancient Maya influence in Belize rainforests
Archaeologists using LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology have uncovered significant evidence of ancient Maya civilization in the rainforests of Belize. Research conducted as part of the Bladen Legacy project reveals that current forest structures in areas like the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area bear the ecological imprint of Maya land management from over a thousand years ago.
Studies published in Scientific Reports show that trees in areas where the Maya constructed agricultural canals are taller and more diverse than in surrounding forests. This is attributed to the engineering of canal systems that reshaped the ecosystem and the leaching of limestone from ancient structures into the soil.
In a related discovery, PhD student Luke Auld-Thomas identified the lost Maya city of Valeriana after finding overlooked LiDAR data online. The settlement contains more than 6,500 pre-Hispanic structures, including pyramids, amphitheaters, and sports fields. These findings highlight how LiDAR technology allows researchers to digitally remove vegetation to reveal hidden archaeological sites and understand how ancient human activity continues to influence modern ecological patterns.
