Lidia Jorge awarded 2026 Camões Prize for Portuguese literature

Portuguese novelist Lidia Jorge was honoured with the 2026 Camões Prize on 2 July. The award, jointly administered by the governments of Portugal and Brazil, includes a €100,000 prize and was granted after a unanimous jury decision held by videoconference.

The jury praised Jorge’s body of work—from early novels such as *O Dia dos Prodígios* to recent titles like *Misericórdia*—for enriching Portuguese‑language literature and addressing themes of colonial history, gender, and societal change. Portuguese President António José Seguro and Brazil’s Minister of Culture Margareth Menezes both highlighted her contribution to Lusophone culture during the ceremony.

Jorge, born in Boliqueime, Algarve, joins a distinguished list of Camões laureates, reinforcing the cultural ties between Portugal, Brazil, and other Portuguese‑speaking nations.
